Chemotherapy works by targeting the rapidly growing cancer cells. However, when the chemotherapeutic agents are transported around the body in the blood, they unfortunately also target normal, healthy cells, especially cell types that divide rapidly, such as our hair cells. This is why many people lose their hair during a course of chemotherapy. However, hair loss can be avoided in many cases by using cooling caps during the chemotherapy treatment itself.

HOW COLD CAPS WORK

The function of the cold caps is to cool the scalp before, during and after chemotherapy treatment, to around minus 16-21 degrees Celsius. This reduces blood flow to approx. 20% of normal, while the metabolism of the hair cells is reduced accordingly. This means that the amount of chemo that reaches the hair cells is minimised. The hair thus has a great chance of being preserved!
