PREPARATION STARTS AT HOME
Before you can use the system, you must freeze the cold caps and freezing elements at home to at least minus 18 degrees Celsius.
Pay attention to the freezing capacity of your freezer and calculate the freezing time accordingly. You should expect it to take at least 24 hours in a normal household freezer. Expect to use two drawers or two shelves in the freezer. The cold caps should always be frozen in the reusable plastic bags they come in.
When you are going for treatment, pack the cooler bag directly from the freezer: Place the cold caps in sets so that you can easily grab a new set when you need to change the cold caps at the hospital. Place the freezing elements at the top of the cooler bag and check that it is closed correctly. Remember the water spray bottle, the shower caps and a towel to put over your shoulders for when you need to wet your hair.
HOW TO DO IT AT THE HOSPITAL
Arrive early for your treatment so you can prepare without stress. Let your nurse know that you are using cold caps. It is always good to be prepared.
Put on your first set of cold caps 30 minutes before the start of chemo. Your hair thickness determines the pre cooling time. NOTE: If you have Afro or Asian hair, your hair must be prepared 45 minutes before chemo start.

THEN USE THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS
-
1. Find a good place to prepare. The patient restroom or waiting room are usually good places.
2. Wet your scalp. Wet all the hair at the scalp with the water spray. Moisture conducts cold and optimizes the effect of the cooling cap.
3. Put on the thin shower cap. It will retain moisture on your scalp. If you have long hair, let it hang loosely under the cap.
4. Put on the first set of cold caps. They should be put on 30 minutes before your chemo infusion starts. If you have very thick hair, choose 45 minutes. If you have long hair, it should hang loosely under the cap. Do not fold it up under the cap! Pull the cap down on your forehead about 3 centimeters below the front hairline. The cap should sit smoothly without air pockets.
-
5. Change to a new set of cold caps after 30 minutes.
Take them out of the cooler bag while you still have the old ones on. Remove the used cold caps and change to a new set without unnecessary delay. The shower cap must remain in place.6. Repeat at 30 minute intervals during the course of chemo and at least 120 minutes after treatment has ended.
7. Now let your hair air dry and give both your scalp and hair a rest for the next 3 days.
8. After use, take it all home to refreeze, and then you're ready for the next time.

"Using cold caps during my chemo has meant everything to me. I'm so grateful that it has given me the opportunity to decide for myself who should know what I'm going through because no one can see, that I'm sick."
